Sweet William is named after a flower, so nobody in the village was surprised when he took up picking them.
Here he is on a fine summer morning with the day's first armful — two sunflowers, each bloom as big as his own face, held up to his nose with both mittens while he takes them in, eyes closed, completely gone. At his size, smelling a sunflower isn't a passing pleasure. It's a full engagement.
He's dressed in soft country layers: a cream suede coat with a zigzag hem, a brown-and-white tweed scarf, dark mittens and leggings, and a black cap sliding back off his white curls. The flowers are bound for home — an elf's house can always use something growing in it.
