She's one of the elf children, and everything about her is small-scale and tender: the sculpted petal bonnet trimmed in lace at the back, the wisp of auburn hair peeking out the front, the purple felt coat over red leggings, the oversized boots she hasn't quite grown into. Petal was designed by my grandmother Jan Simpich, and she is among the rarest elves I've handled — the children were made in far smaller numbers than the elves themselves, and Petal almost never surfaces. If you've been waiting for one, this is the kind of chance that doesn't come around twice.
