Merry Christmas - Carollers

$350.00

Condition: Excellent | The stand alone Caroller | Merry Christmas

She's ringing the bell and singing at the same time, and she's giving both everything she has.

Her head is tipped back, her mouth is wide open on a high note, and her bell is raised as high as her arm will reach. There are freckles across her nose, and the tip of it is pink from the cold. Her eyes are turned up toward the rooftops, as if she's hoping the song will carry that far.

She's dressed for a long night of it. A bright red double-breasted coat with gold buttons down the front and a little buttoned half-belt at the back. A tartan scarf with fringed ends, a matching tartan skirt, and a tartan tam with a cream felt band and a pom-pom on top. White felt mittens, black stockings, and red boots with tiny gold bells at the ankles, so she jingles even when she's standing still.

Merry Christmas was part of the Simpich doll shop from its early years right through to the very end. She was made to stand on her own, apart from the Carolers, though she fits right in beside them. Over those years the design changed. The early Merry Christmas was essentially a larger-scale bell ringer. Later she was given details of her own, and you can see them on this one: the tartan tam, and, if you turn her around, two sculpted braids tied off with cream satin ribbon bows.

Robert Simpich, who founded the doll shop with his wife, Jan, sculpted the original. This piece was then cast, hand-painted, and dressed in hand-sewn clothing in the Simpich doll shop, and set on a wooden base.

She is in excellent condition. The red of the coat is still bright, the tartan is unfaded, and both ribbon bows and all of her boot bells are intact.
