The Stained Glass Circus (2001)

In the summer of 2001, David presented his original play, The Stained Glass Circus at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. This production completed a trilogy of plays structured around the theme of "puppeteers and stringed creations" (the others being The Puppet Maker: A Story of Christmas and Portraits, A Gallery on Strings).  This original work of fiction by David explored the conflict between joy and despair expressed in the arts.  David portrayed Albert Alger, a successful but despairing artist who returns to the attic he used as a studio when he was very young.  He uncovers the circus puppets he created there and together they retrace-- and redefine-- the painful journey he has taken from "Color and Light" to... "A Circus of the Night." Although this play was perhaps the least seen of any Simpich production, David regards it as a personal favorite.
