Hansel and Gretel
(1993) |
|
Hansel and Gretel was David's first return to designing after the Simpich Marionette Theatre facility closed in 1992. In adapting the story, David chose to combine classic elements from the Brothers Grimm fairytale and Humperdinck opera with many original ideas including a forest of walking, talking "marionette trees" and a Great Prince disguised as the gingerbread boy, Pfefferkuchen. This valiant cookie rescues the children from the witch by offering himself as her largest, most luscious --and last -- supper. David portrayed the Humperdinck "Sandman" in the play, serving as narrator and puppeteer. The play premiered at the Mount Saint Francis Auditorium in Colorado Springs and toured throughout Colorado for a short time. |
