In honor of the Simpich's first daughter, Elisabeth, David premiered his solo production of Dickens' Great Expectations in 1990. The inspiration for the show's concept, which featured David portraying Dickens as the storyteller and puppeteer, came from the author's signature writing style. As David points out, "When reading Dickens, one can feel his presence hovering above his stories... he is the sovereign conductor giving his characters life and voice ... He even moves the set pieces..." This show was the first to tour outside of Colorado after the Simpich Theatre closed in 1992 and was presented at several Puppet and Dickens festivals. |
