Swedish legend tells of Saint Lucia from Sicily, martyred for her Christian faith, who first appeared in Sweden during a famine in the middle ages. She brought food, drink and the promise that there would be gifts for Christmas. In modern times Lucia is, by tradition, the oldest daughter of the family. On December 13th, she rises early and dresses as shown. She then carries a tray of cookies or special buns to each member of her family. Our Lucia was modeled after the oldest Simpich granddaughter, Polly.
